Tarps are needed for many common commercial and at-home uses, but, when you go to a tarp retailer, you often find several options. Which one is best for your needs? In general, a tarp covers an object and, when secured in place, will cover the object well enough to protect it from water damage. Nevertheless, the common materials for tarps on the market are polyethylene, polypropylene, vinyl, and canvas. Out of these choices, which one works best for you?

Another common material for tarps is polypropylene. Nevertheless, if you need such material, the tarp is usually advertised as "mesh." Mesh tarps are a permeable cover that lets light pass through. More specifically, this tarp blocks out 75 percent of the sunlight and lets the other 25 percent pass through. Mesh tarps are commonly used for gardens and trucks, and any instance in which having a permeable cover is necessary.
Certain tarps are designed for specific purposes, although these may be made from polyethylene, mesh, or vinyl. Truck tarps, for example, are made of either material. While these need to be tied tightly over or around the load, polyethylene or vinyl is best for a load that cannot be exposed to water, such as asphalt or lumber, and mesh is best for loads that won’t be affected, such as rocks.
Other types of specific use tarps are made from polyethylene. Many of these have a large-scale use, such as construction and baseball field tarps, that need to cover and protect a wide area. On a smaller scale, poly tarps are ideal temporary roof coverings in hurricanes, as, when attached to a roof, the material prevents water from seeping in and creating mold and water damage.
No matter which type of tarp you need, all are treated to be waterproof, UV resistant, and fire retardant. Additional qualities include mold, mildew, and dry rot resistance.
