A canopy is simply an outdoor structure that provides shade and protection. Canopies, however, range from sturdy, long term use structures like portable garages and carports to temporary structures like cabanas, pop up canopies, and party tents. As each of these structures has a different purpose, each type of canopy and steel canopy frame is made from different materials.
A portable garage canopy is often the strongest type of canopy, as this structure is essentially functioning as a garage by sheltering vehicles and providing storage space. This type of canopy structure can be used in place of a brick-and-mortar garage or it can be used in addition to a standard garage. This standard type of portable garage canopy structure is made of a powder-coated or galvanized steel frame and the canopy providing shade is a heavy duty polyethylene canopy. This type of outdoor canopy can further be modified by a canopy kit to add side walls, flaps, and doors. This type of canopy structure, in addition, is a multipurpose canopy. The structure can be a boat canopy during the winter or storage shed. For non-seasonal vehicles, a canopy structure can be a permanent garage for your vehicles or for other equipment. A canopy can also be a run-in shed for horses and, if small enough, can be a dog kennel for multiple dogs when divided.
Similar to a portable garage is a metal canopy shelter or a carport canopy. A carport canopy has a similar powder-coated or galvanized steel frame, although the canopy part of the shelter is metal. While a polyethylene canopy shelter is treated to be waterproof and UV resistant, a metal carport canopy has these properties automatically. For a long term investment for a durable and sturdy outdoor canopy, a metal carport canopy will provide many years of use and won't need a replacement canopy for several years.
Other types of outdoor canopies are used as temporary structures. These canopy tents are usually referred to as first up canopy tents, party tents, EZ up canopies, pop up canopies, pick up canopies, and instant canopies. Regardless of the name used for the structure, this type of outdoor canopy is temporary and easy to put up. This canopy usually has a steel frame and a polyester canopy that is easy to put up and take down and can be transported easily, so it can be taken to the beach, a flea market or outdoor bazaar, or any outdoor location needing shelter. At home, a pop up canopy can be used for backyard parties or as a patio canopy, as it can easily be set up on your patio for an outdoor party or picnic.
In addition to setting up a portable garage or carport canopy or an instant or pop up canopy, many of these structures can be modified for weather changes. For example, when a carport or portable garage canopy structure needs to protect a boat or RV during the winter, side walls and flaps can be added to shield the vehicle. For a party canopy tent, mosquito netting or walls can be added in case of insects or rain during an event. All of these additions can be added by a canopy kit to install polyethylene walls or roll-down side mosquito netting.
